Hyndhead School is a 'stand-alone' Special School in a quiet residential area of Buckhaven.  We have 4 composite classes and we currently accommodate 20 pupils  from P1 to S6.  All of our pupils have severe and complex additional support needs.

The school has a gym and a small swimming pool.  We also have a Snoézelen or sensory room and a 'flat' area where pupils access, for example, Home Economics.  We now have a wonderful outdoor space:  our Raymond Gunn Sensory Garden and our recently upgraded playground area.

Our curriculum focuses on the 4 Capacities of Curriculum for Excellence.   We have articulated these with our policy guidelines.   We focus on learning in 'real life' contexts: going into the wider community as much as possible.   Our Senior Class works within the SQA's NQ framework at Access 1 level.

All of our pupils have either a Co-ordinated Support Plan or an Individual.S.P.   These are part of their Personal Learning Plan and their Individual Targets are met through the Curriculum for Excellence.   We foster strong relationships with families as this is key to the realisation of our targets.   Hyndhead School is a "can do, will do" school, building on the principles of Enterprise.   In 2006 we won the Determined to Succeed's 'Most Enterprising Special School' in Scotland.   We adopt Eco School and Health Promoting School approaches to Health and Well Being and Citizenship.   We foster community relationships.   We realise curricular and PLP targets in Buckhaven Community Centre;  in visits to local retail outlets; in swimming at Leven Pool and the the Fife Institute;  and at 'Riding for the Disabled' at Kilconquhar.

Our  ethos is positive and welcoming  We manage challenging behaviours through the 'Gentle Teaching' approaches of bonding and redirection. We have a TEACCH room that successfully supports pupils diagnosed with ASD.

Our underpinning principles of Communication, movement, access and independence are embedded in our 3 key philosophies of C.O.D.E. (Communication Opportunities During Education);  M.O.V.E. (Movement Opportunities Via Education) and A.I.D.E. (Access and Independence During Education).   These are realised through our holistic approaches and multiagency working with Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.

We aim to make Hyndhead School a school for the 21st Century.
