S1

During their time within the Modern Studies part of the Social Subjects rotation, pupils will be in Modern Studies for four periods a week. In this time, they study a number of areas.

  • An introduction to Modern Studies - what is the subject all about?
  • Living in a Democracy - how do we decide who has power in a society? What rights and responsibilities do we all have in this society? What rules and laws must we follow?
  • Inequality and Need - why do some people have more needs than others? Why do some countries have more needs than others? What are the specific needs of families, elderly people and the homeless? What can be done about this?

Pupils are tested towards the end of the course, and marks are awarded based upon the 5-14 curriculum.

S2

Pupils return to Modern Studies in S2, again as part of the Social Subjects rotation.

This time they study…

  • Rights - what are human rights? How are these abused around the world? What can be done about this?
  • UK and USA Compared - how do the two countries differ in terms of society? How do they differ in terms of politics? How are schools and issues about gun control different?

Pupils are tested towards the end of the course, and marks are awarded based upon the 5-14 curriculum.
