Originally commissioned by Celtic Connections 2008, Bridging the Gap aims to exhibit and develop a genuine musical, stylistic and social collaboration between classical and traditional music. Specialising in each genre, fiddler and composer Patsy Reid has first hand experience in both disciplines, including the social, technical and compositional diversities of each. This piece of music sets out to transcend any such divisions and the musicians involved have been specially chosen for their stylistic knowledge and expertise. Structurally, the work takes the form of a violin concerto, with Patsy taking on the role of soloist, joined by piano, guitar, double bass, drum-kit and string ensemble.
Harmonically, Bridging the Gap comprises nine original melodies, each based on one of the seven modern modes of music: Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian and Locrian. Each of these modes has a very distinct flavour, a result of the intervals within the scale from which it is composed. Essentially a journey through the modes, this 55-minute work provides an invigorating yet educational experience for the listener.
The original cast of Bridging the Gap consisted of Patsy Reid (fiddle), Aidan O’Rourke (fiddle), Anna Wendy Stevenson (violin), Deirdre Morrison (violin), Lydia Whitaker (violin), Iain Hutchison (viola), Mairi Campbell (viola) Natalie Haas (cello), Duncan Lyall (double bass), Mhairi Hall (piano), Michael Bryan (guitar) and Iain Copeland (drum-kit). If possible, all of the above musicians will take part in the proposed Tune Up tour, whilst provisional confirmation has been attained from Mhairi Hall, Michael Bryan, Duncan Lyall and Natalie Haas.
Recorded live at the debut performance, Bridging the Gap has since been released by Vertical Records, to great acclaim.
