Money and benefits

The Social Security Office should be informed of any changes to your circumstances, such as starting work, even if it is unpaid, if you are getting benefits.

Starting Work

Starting work doesn't mean you automatically lose your benefits.  It depends on:

  • what benefits you are getting
  • how many hours you work
  • what you earn
  • what your personal circumstances are.

Rules for grants and benefits are complicated.  Everyone's situation is different. It's a good idea to find out early on in your plans how your benefits may be affected if you do gain employment.  It is important to talk to people who will give you the best advice.
