Your job as a parent is one of the most difficult there is – it can be both challenging and rewarding. It is a job where very little training is given to prepare you for what lies ahead.

Every family experiences difficulty from time to time and it can test the best of parents. When additional pressures come along, they can make a hard job nearly impossible. And when you're in the middle of a difficult time,  it can be hard to think about what help or information you might need.

When things go wrong it doesn't mean you have failed as a parent – things go wrong for everyone. There is no such thing as the perfect parent. It's often the way you handle difficulties that can make a difference to your children, both now and in the future.

However, there are some ways that can make it a less stressful and more rewarding experience.  On these pages we offer you advice on:

  • bullying
  • babysitting
  • child minding and day care
  • children left alone
  • children with additional needs
  • domestic abuse
  • drugs and alcohol
  • health and safety
  • internet and mobile phone safety
  • managing your child's behaviour
  • never shake the baby
  • positive parenting and self esteem
  • sexual exploitation
  • smacking
  • teenage pregnancy
  • truancy and running away
