Route Description
This route is 15.5 miles and is on and off road. It is suitable for Adults with older children and has some hilly stretches.
This route begins in Ladybank, a relatively new town in Howe of Fife, made a burgh in 1878. The route runs through villages and towns including Auchtermuchty where, for a long time, linen weaving was one of the main industries. If you allow yourself plenty of time to cycle this route you can visit the picturesque village of Falkland with its strong connections with the Scottish royal family.
3.6 miles (5.8 km) You can cycle this route in either direction but we suggest you follow the guidelines below.
As you leave Ladybank station turn right and follow the sign for Auchtermuchty and Dunshalt to cycle the route anticlockwise, arriving at Fakland towards the end of your journey.

Jimmy Shand, the famous Scots bank leader and accordion player, has made his home in Auchtermuchty. The town is host to a thriving folk festival held every August.

2.1 miles (3.4 km) After leaving Auchtermuchty, look out for the signpost to Falkland.
Visit Falkland Palace, a National Trust for Scotland property, and the associated Museum in the Town Hall. Or explore the village and the craft shops, antique shops and cafes in their restored buildings.

Falkland Palace was the favourite hunting lodge of many Stewart monarchs, including Mary Queen of Scots. The village prospered under their patronage. Some 17th and 18th Century houses also survive today.

Freuchie to Ladybank
5.0 miles (8.1 km) In Freuchie, turn left at the signpost for Kingskettle and Ladybank.
Where royalty once hunted wild boar, farmers now harvest the fields. Vegetables are important crops in this area.
