Competence and Update Training
Safety management systems that apply to outdoor adventure activities regard the competence of the leader as central to safe, responsible operation with groups in hazardous natural environments. That competence is generally regarded as the combination of experience, relevant up-to-date training, and a commitment to ongoing personal involvement in an activity.
Those who rely on previously acquired qualifications for their professional or vocational credibility should recognise that competency must be retained by appropriate on-going training that reflects continuing interest and involvement in the activity.
After qualifying, they are encouraged to update their knowledge and maintain their level of competence, particularly in areas where formal revalidation is not currently an NGB requirement, by seeking out and attending suitable refresher courses. Update training courses are available.
