Lose yourself in a summer of McTaggART
On Saturday 3rd July Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery is launching its summer exhibition called “McTaggart’s Children” with an afternoon of family fun. Clydebuilt Theatre are running drop in Seaside Special puppet-making workshops and living history actors will tell visitors about spending a day at the beach in Victorian times. Saturday’s Family Fun Time kicks off a series of events and activities in the galleries for adults and children throughout the run of the exhibition.
McTaggart’s Children is the biggest and best celebration in the UK of the Scottish artist William McTaggart. It is 100 years since his death and a good time to give visitors the chance to enjoy his beautiful paintings of sunny cornfields and stormy seas. The show takes a new line in exploring McTaggart’s pictures by focusing on the children in them. He had a close relationship with his own children – he had 15 of them – and often used them as models.

For McTaggart’s Children Fife Council has borrowed pictures from public and private lenders. Twenty eight loaned paintings have been brought together for the first time to hang alongside 20 paintings from Kirkcaldy’s collection. The show includes paintings borrowed from galleries in London, (including the Tate), as well as from galleries in Aberdeen, Bradford, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Greenock. Members of the McTaggart family have also lent some paintings along with other private collectors and the Royal Bank of Scotland Group.
Brian Goodall, Fife Council’s Chair of Housing and Communities, said “Following on from the great success of Jack Vettriano’s exhibition earlier this year - which drew a record crowd of over 46,000 visitors – I hope that McTaggart’s Children will bring a large number of people to Kirkcaldy and to Fife this summer. Both shows have only been made possible through the Celebrating Fife: 2010 programme which is all about encouraging participation in the arts and culture. I am proud that Fife has brought two of the biggest names in Scottish art to Fife this year: first Jack Vettriano and now William McTaggart.”
