An exhibition of Dunfermline Diamonds is now open at Dunfermline Carnegie Library. These aren’t the kind of diamonds you wear round your neck but, they are the people that Dunfermline has most to be proud of. Fife’s Libraries & Museums have put on the exhibition as part of a Celebrating Fife 2010 project called Local Heroes.
Dr Fiona Watson spoke about the nature of heroism, past and present as she opened the exhibition, “Dunfermline has many heroes – those who were born to it, those who came to it by circumstance and those who get there through sheer hard work. We need the sportsmen, writers and musicians of today to be our heroes too, as they inspire us to think that with some talent and hard work we can be like them – and they put in some really hard graft.”
The exhibition will include the strong ancient royal connection as well as its more modern heroes. While the royal connection has faded, Dunfermline has produced many men and women to admire. Musicians, writers, Olympic medal winners and artists are all represented here. From those who have won honours on the battlefield to those we have cheered on the football field, the people of Dunfermline have much to celebrate.
Bob Izatt, Customer Services Team Leader commented, “Local Heroes is all about celebrating Fife’s famous, and not-so-famous, sons and daughters to show just how proud we ought to be of our county. There are so many famous and talented Fifers connected with Dunfermline that they just had to have their own exhibition. There is also a series of events linked to the heroes including evenings with Barbara Dickson and Jim Leishman and talks about Robert the Bruce, John Forbes and Dorothy Dunnett.”
Stevie Crawford, one of the Dunfermline-born sporting heroes is included in the exhibition. He commented, “When I look around the exhibition I feel proud to share a space with the real big heroes like Robert the Bruce and Andrew Carnegie. I think its more important for my family though because I hope to pass on to the next generation my pride in Dunfermline.”
As well as this exhibition, Dunfermline’s Diamonds are included on a new website which currently features over 150 Fifers whose talents and achievements have made them our Local Heroes - www.fifedirect.org.uk/localheroes. This is a work in progress and the website will be updated regularly as new heroes are identified.
The exhibition runs until May 22nd and is open during normal library opening hours. For more information on the events contact your local library or visit the Local Heroes website.
