Scrutiny committees get down to business

The council’s two scrutiny committees are getting down to business after the summer recess.  Scrutiny committees for education, social and communities and environment, finance and corporate services will be held in public at Fife House on Tuesday 14 August at 9.30am and 2 pm respectively.

Leader of Fife Council Cllr Alex Rowley said: “Our new decision making structure will allow us to deal with business quickly, effectively and in the best interest of the people of Fife.  Scrutiny is an important part of any democratic process.  We want people to see and hear for themselves first hand how we make decisions and decide what their money is spent on.  Our two scrutiny committees will help to ensure that we provide that transparency.”

One of the first tasks of the environment, finance and corporate services scrutiny committee is to respond to a request from the council’s  Executive Committee to review council-wide expenditure  of  £46M on transport and to consider issues relating to customer contact services, including telephone numbering.  The scrutiny group, chaired by Cllr Dave Dempsey, will agree the format and scope of the reviews. Cllr Dempsey said: “Council officers are providing us with background information and it’s up to us to then decide what we feel needs looked at in more detail.

“At the moment we don’t know how wide-ranging the reviews will be nor which aspects of transport expenditure and customer contact we’re going to focus in on.  We’ll make that decision at committee once we have all the facts.”

Each scrutiny committee has 16 members representing all the political parties.

The scrutiny committees will monitor the performance of council services and third party organisations that the council funds, and have the power to examine and question decisions made by the Executive.
