Following the collapse of a retaining wall at
In July of this year, extreme rainfall had a catastrophic effect on the wall. An 18 metre long section collapsed creating a large void in the footway. A contract was awarded for the reconstruction based on a design that had been used successfully on other masonry wall repairs. However, once on site, it was discovered that a high pressure water main servicing Cupar was in place. Owing to its strategic importance, Scottish Water imposed an exclusion zone around the water main, within which excavations could not take place.
A revised design was developed in cooperation with the existing contractor, DCT, taking into account issues like road closures, damage to the water main and the difficulties with access. This resulted in the costs of the repairs rising to £450,000.
Mike Thorpe, Team Leader, Structural Services said: “We are working closely with the contractor to complete the works quickly while maintaining single file traffic controlled by temporary traffic lights, thereby avoiding long and difficult diversions or indeed a complete road closure. It’s very important that we restore full access to the A914 as soon as possible to allow free flowing traffic. The piling stage of the works should be complete by Christmas.”
