A team from Fife Fire and Rescue Service completed the Caledonian Challenge at the weekend in 22 and a half hours raising £9662 for the Scottish Burned Children’s Club.
Lesley Forrester from Dunfermline Fire Station, Graham Barclay and Gavin McKerchar from the Community Safety Dept at Dunfermline Fire Station, Craig Prattis from Lochgelly Fire Station and Norrie McGlinchey who is retired made up the dynamic team from Fife Fire and Rescue Service.
Participants were required to walk 54 miles of the West Highland Way in only 24 hours; starting at Gairlochy, north of Fort William and finishing at Auchtertyre, inside the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.
Gavin Mckerchar said “It was a difficult but worthwhile challenge that has raised a significant amount of money for the Scottish Burned Children’s Club. The team would like to thank the Service and the Chief Fire Officer for all the support. We would also like to thank Scottish Widows and Megan Taylor, Youth Worker for DiversiFIRE for driving our bus and supporting us through the challenge.”
The team took part in the challenge to raise funds for the Scottish Burned Children's Club; which was founded in 2001 and serves to provide support to burn survivors and their families.
The charity strives to help each child come to terms with injuries obtained as a result of a burn or scald, including the physical and psychological trauma, lack of confidence and the changes to their appearance. Above and beyond this the Charity seeks to reduce the number of burn and scald injuries in Scotland by raising awareness by promoting safe practices.
The team is still raising money which will enable the Scottish Children’s Burns Club to run its annual summer camp and continues to accept sponsorship until 29th July via http://www.caledonianchallenge.com/teams/E-One.
