FIFE’s primary 6 and 7 pupils enjoyed a red carpet event on Thursday 21 June 2012, when they attended an awards ceremony to celebrate Say4Schools storyboard animation competition 2012.
The competition was launched in March 2012 and attracted over 700 entries from primary schools across Fife. Pupils were invited to create storyboards on the topic of ‘Stop vandalism in your community’ to help raise awareness about how vandalism affects them and their community. To help pupils, Fife’s Community Safety Officers visited schools to talk to pupils about vandalism and its effects on the community and David Imrie and Erik Knussen from Fife Education Service visited schools to promote the use of Digital Techologies such as Digital Animation, Digital Comic Books and Digital Music to help them with their storyboards.
Bryan Kirkaldy, Head of Education said, “In developing 21st Century learners we need to use and apply current technologies as we deliver a curriculum for excellence in all Fife primary schools. This competition is a great platform for pupils to put into practice what they have learned. Well done to all the finalists and all pupils who entered, the imagination and creativity of your entries shows that Fife has got talent.”
The event was attended by pupils, parents and staff from schools as well as representatives from Fife Education Service, Fife Constabulary, Fife’s Community Safety Panels, Adam Smith College and invited guests. All guests were welcomed with a celebratory juice and enjoyed a sumptuous buffet including homemade fairy cakes, filled baguettes, sausage rolls and fresh fruit, provided by Karen Logan and her staff at Café Derran, Auchterderran.
John Wood from Glenrothes Community Safety Panel, commented “On behalf of the Glenrothes and other area Safety Panels, it was felt that the whole process from running the competition to the awards ceremony has been a great success and we hope that this will serve as a blue-print for future initiatives.”
The standard of competition entries was outstanding and these were showcased at the event, highlighting the talent and creativity of pupils in Fife. The judges had a difficult time choosing a winner but after much deliberation, Hannah from Touch Primary School was chosen as the overall winner and won a Nintendo Wii for the school and a Kindle for herself. Runner-ups received an Animation Kit for their school and a WH Smith voucher for themselves. The runner-ups were:
| Kirkcaldy Area | Rachael | Torbain Primary School |
| Glenrothes Area | Robert | Collydean Primary School |
| Dunfermline Area | Nicole | Inverkeithing Primary School |

| Levenmouth Area | Matthew | East Wemyss Primary School |

The winning entry will also be made into an animation by students from Adam Smith College and a DVD will be released in the near future – so watch this space!
On behalf of Say4Schools, we’d like to thank all the pupils who entered and to everyone who helped to make this competition a great success.
