Ladybank Primary School P6/7 running the Cupcake Cafe

LadybankPrimary Schoolpupils have been running their own successful business, the Cupcake Café since October last year.  Led by primary teacher Jenna Gillfillan and her primary 6/7 class, the cafe is open to the community every Friday morning in the school dinner hall, offering a range of teas, coffees and cakes to rival any high street coffee shop.  The business is proving so successful that the team are now considering how to re-invest their profits back in to local community projects.

Culture of Enterprise Co-ordinator, Murray Allan went out to visit the budding entrepreneurs. He said ”  The children are tremendously enthusiastic about running the café and at the same time are learning about concepts such as making a profit and giving good customer service.  The pupils are also gaining knowledge of their local economy and getting an introduction to business and enterprise in a fun and simple way.”

While he was at the school he took the opportunity to play the schools enterprise game withthe children. Developed by Fife Council as a way for young people to learn about business, enterprise and the Fife economy, the Fife Schools Enterprise Game involves young people ‘running’ their own business in groups, using their entrepreneurial skills to make their enterprise as successful as possible. It has been made more real for young people with a design that reflects the local economic community.  They make, sell and deliver to customers around the board, having to overcome problems and make decisions about how best to reinvest any profits into the business.  Through this they discover how businesses operate, learn enterprising skills and qualities and begin to understand a range of economic ideas like cost, profit, risk, investment and customer-supplier relationships.

The school is also looking to establish relationships with existing Fife businesses in order to work together on local partnerships.
