The multi-agency Moving and Handling and Handling for Carers Project was the winner of the Health and Wellbeing at Work and/or in the Community category at the 2012 Fife Excellence Awards held on Friday 22 June.

The award recognised the impact of this unique initiative (developed in partnership between Fife Council Social Work Service, NHS Fife, Fife Carers Centre and PAMIS) on the lives of family carers and service users.

Family carers provide vital support to relatives who can be amongst the most vulnerable people in our communities. Carers come from a wide range of backgrounds and many are elderly or frail or have long standing illnesses themselves.  The serious impact on their health of providing long-term care, in particular the risk of musculo-skeletal injury, is now well documented, as is the need for moving and handling training.

Billy Swan, Service Manager said “Integral to the success of the Moving and Handling and Handling for Carers Project has been the knowledge, skills and input of the Social Work Moving and Handling Team.  The team has worked with partner agencies and family carers to produce and deliver a range of resources and supports.  These include the delivery of workshops, the provision of one-to-one support to carers in their own homes, the production of an information booklet and the development of a DVD aimed at family carers produced in collaboration with the national charity ‘BackCare’.

Councillor Judy Hamilton, Executive Spokesperson for Social Work and Health said: “I am delighted that this partnership project has received recognition for the outstanding work of the team in supporting carers and their loved ones. The various supports and resources provided have contributed to improved outcomes for service users, improved health for family carers and a reduction in the requirement for additional services from statutory services including residential and hospital admissions.”
