Cllr Tony Martin Launches new Cycling Charter

Fife Council has launched its new Cycling Charter for Fife.  The document sets out the priorities over the next five years for increasing the level of cycling in Fife.  It contains a programme of measures, designed to promote greater levels of active travel, particularly amongst the young as well as measures to improve safety and convenience for day to day journeys.

Councillor Tony Martin, chair of Enterprise, Environment and Transportation Committee welcomed the launch of the new Cycling Charter for Fife.  He gave his seal of approval to the Charter saying: “This is a first class plan which gives clear direction on how we intend to help encourage greater levels of cycling within Fife over the next five years and beyond.  Fife Council has long recognised and promoted the many benefits of cycling and has been commended by The Scottish Government’s, Cycling Scotland on a number of occasions as the lead local authority in Scotland in developing cycling.  This plan will help further that distinction”.  The Charter was developed with input from a wide range of stakeholder groups.  Many of the core principals of the document are based on successful initiatives adopted in cycle friendly European Countries, such as Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands.

John Mitchell, Fife Councils, Lead Officer for Transport Strategy added: “While we are encouraging growth in the levels of commuter cycling in Fife, we have achieved a significant increase in leisure cycling where we have been able to implement high quality, safe cycle routes, which the public has obviously appreciated.  So, we know that there is a growing demand to cycle more and we are hopeful that through education, training and further improvements we will be able to affect the way people travel now and in the future.  And, when considering the current financial and environmental challenges, which we all face, it is worth noting that more than half of all the journeys that Fifers make are below five miles.  It is therefore clear to see the potential which cycling could offer to help make such short trips.”
