Councillors expenses for 2008/09 published

Fife Council has published details of allowances and expenses paid during 2008/09 to Fife’s 78 current councillors.
 
Councillors receive an annual salary and can claim re-imbursement of the costs of travel expenses incurred when on official Council business. The total salaries and allowances paid to councillors during 2008/09 amounted to £1,565,680.01– an increase of £70,063.80. In addition, councillors receive telephone allowances and the reimbursement of the costs of travel expenses incurred when on official Council business.
 
Receipted expenses reimbursed to councillors do not include the cost of Council provided transport. Annual salary and allowances paid are subject to tax and National Insurance.
 
From the 1 April 2008 a Council Car is only available to the Provost for official Civic Duties. Staff are employed to drives these vehicles but this is only one of their main duties. The annual cost of providing the car was £9,165.88.
