Invest in Fife has welcomed the First Minister’s announcement that Dutch renewable energy company 2-B Energy has joined forces with Scottish Enterprise to deliver cutting-edge offshore wind technology with the potential to reduce costs by up to 45%.

The project is targeted for development at the Scottish Enterprise-owned Energy Park Fife in Methil where 2-B Energy has stepped up its ambitions and focus has shifted from a single-near shore unit to two units offshore in a broader project. The project will be part of a test and demonstration hub of activity which will accommodate a range of potential interests in the Scottish offshore wind sector.

Ross Mackenzie, Lead Officer said:  “The joint venture between 2-B Energy and Scottish Enterprise is excellent news for the Energy Park in Methil, for Fife and for the renewables sector in Scotland.  This reinforces the vital role Energy Park Fife has to play in the future of this developing sector.  2B Energy are aiming to introduce new technology to the offshore wind sector, which if proved successful has the potential to drive down costs of producing power.”

The organisations will work together to support commercialisation of 2-B’s unique two-bladed offshore turbine concept through development of offshore test and demonstration facilities in Scotland – potentially by the end of 2014.

Offshore wind is set to become Scotland’s next industrial revolution with the potential to attract billions of pounds of investment and create tens of thousands of highly skilled and sustainable jobs. The industry represents the biggest opportunity for sustainable economic growth in Scotland for a generation and will play a vital role in meeting the Scottish Government’s target for renewables to generate 100% of the country’s domestic electricity demand, alongside other sources to enable Scotland to remain a net exporter of power.
