Leven Beach lose Blue Flag
Archived news: published on Tuesday 17 Jul 2012 by Fife Council
Leven Beach has lost its’ international Blue Flag status because recent bathing water samples, taken by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), failed to meet the required top EU Bathing Water Directive standards – an imperative award criteria.
Leven beach has consistently met the top water quality standards and has been awarded the Blue Flag by Scotland’s leading charity for the environment Keep Scotland Beautiful for three consecutive years, but unfortunately water quality samples taken at Leven on the 6 and 12 June and the 10 July did not meet Guideline standards. If more than two of the 20 planned samples taken fail to meet Intestinal Enterococci standards at any point during the bathing water sampling season (1 June – 15 September) the Blue Flag must be withdrawn. (please see table below for actual results).
Keep Scotland Beautiful will be working closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and Fife Council to make sure that the causes of the water quality breaches are identified.
Chair of Levenmouth Area Committee, Councillor Tom Adams, said: "The water tests at Leven beach had been carried out at a time of recent heavy downpours which may have caused higher than normal bacterial readings and we are awaiting confirmation from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency who monitor water quality at Leven Beach.
"However, the water quality is back to high standard now but the strict criteria for the Blue Flag award means we cannot fly the Blue Flag for the rest of the season.
"Leven beach will still have lifeguard cover for the remainder of the season and it will be maintained to the standard visitors and residents have come to expect.
"We hope to receive a Blue Flag for Leven Beach next year."
