Snow plough clearing road
Transportation Services is trialling a new road gritting product called Safecote to help keep our roads ice-free this winter.
Safecote is a derivative of sugar production and has powerful anti-icing, de-icing and corrosion inhibition properties. It is blended with traditional rock salt and can be used during precautionary salting of roads during winter gritting operations.
Derek Crowe, Senior Manager of Roads & Engineering Services explained that the purpose of using Safecote is to improve salt spreading efficiency, as manufacturers claim that around 30% less salt is required to grit an area. Salt blended with Safecote also stays in place on the roads better than conventional rock salt.
“If confirmed by our trial, this will provide real efficiency and environmental benefits in the long term. The negative impacts of road salting have become apparent over many years, since salts affect roadside vegetation, soil, water quality, vehicles and road infrastructure such as bridges and structures.”
Safecote is currently being trialled on a route in north
If successful, this environmentally friendly product could be used throughout
