Fife Councils Beautiful Fife Campaign for 2009 reached a conclusion on Wednesday night at the Rothes Halls when communities received their certificates from Councillor Frances Melville, Provost of Fife.

The campaign was launched as the beginning of the year and now rewards all communities that participate. Judged on criteria based on national best practise, the communities that put themselves forward learned how well they had done and were awarded with, Gold, Silver Gilt, Silver or Bronze certificates. Seven category awards and a number of discretionary awards were also presented.

The campaign is presently run by an advisory group made up of community members from across Fife and signs will now be erected at the gateways to the communities, recognising their achievements.

Keith Jackson, Fife Council Community and Event Officer said: “Communities throughout Fife continue to make significant efforts to improve their local environments and this campaign recognises and celebrates those achievements. Irrespective of the award obtained, the real winner is the community itself.

“Fife is beginning to be recognised at a national level for the manner in which it supports its communities to make environmental changes and this recognition is enhanced through the Beautiful Fife Campaign which assesses the community on its Horticultural Achievement, Environmental Responsibility and its Community Involvement.

“The Beautiful Scotland Awards take place on Monday 21st September at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen, when Low Valleyfield, Cairneyhill, Kingseat, Aberdour, Grange of Lindores and Cupar will all learn their fate. There is no doubt that some of the communities featuring in Beautiful Fife that are not already participating in Beautiful Scotland, are nearly ready to take that 'step up', and that potential exists for many more in the future. The Britain in Bloom Awards take place on Wednesday 23rd September when St Andrews, Glenrothes and Falkland will learn how well they have done in this prestigious campaign.”

Councillor Brian Goodall, Chair of Housing and Communities added, “It is one of Fife Councils ‘Big 8’ priorities to become the leading green council and the great work done by these communities who participate in Beautiful Fife can only add to this. There is no better activity for increasing civic pride in the community and enhancing the environment at the same time. Many think that these campaigns are just about pretty baskets and containers but I know that these communities have also been assessed on their environmental credentials and how the community works together to achieve these criteria. The added bonus to all this activity is of course that it is good fun and healthy exercise. We are also seeing a spin off, as smaller neighbourhoods begin to address similar issues within their locality and these communities are being guided through the national Neighbourhood Awards. I congratulate all those involved and look forward to witnessing an increase in this type of activity in the near future.”

The Beautiful Fife Campaign assesses communities not just on their floral efforts but also on their care of other aspects of the environment such as biodiversity, litter, community involvement and even minimising the demand placed on natural resources and any harmful impact on the environment.
