The Primary 6 pupils, together with parents and staff, have worked closely with Esterform Packaging Ltd., Recycle Fife a social enterprise company that is supported by Fife Council's Development Services, and a local charity organisation, Sustainable Communities Initiative, to build the greenhouse. Esterform Packaging Ltd. in conjunction with Woodrows, Dunfermline and Recycle Fife supplied the bottles and Sustainable Communities Initiative designed the greenhouse and assisted with the construction - teaching the children how to build the walls with the bottles, whilst at the same time, delivering the educational package that goes with it; the 3R's - reduce, recycle, reuse.
The building of the greenhouse is part of the McLean Primary's work on its Eco-Schools Action Plan and will help the school on its way to gaining Green Flag Award status from Keep Scotland Beautiful. The greenhouse will encourage the children to see the benefits of re-using materials as well as allowing them to study the ways in which various plants grow.
William Spalding,
"Without the generous support of a number of people and organisations, the greenhouse wouldn't have been such a success and we would like to extend our thanks to everyone who has helped make this possible".
