Successful prevention of homelessness support now Fife-wide

The valuable services of Fife Council’s Prevention First scheme, which sees the council working closely with voluntary sector organisations, are now available across the whole of Fife.

The main aim is to prevent people from becoming homeless by helping them find achievable solutions to their housing problems before they lose their permanent address.

Derek Muir, Head of Housing & Neighbourhood Services at Fife Council explained: “Prevention First puts the focus on providing in-depth advice and support to people who are not in settled accommodation. The way it works creates more of an opportunity for earlier intervention. This means the partners can often help people secure a new home before they become homeless or require temporary accommodation from the Council.

“The pilot services ran in two areas of Fife and have proven to be very successful. In the first six months of the pilot services, the number of homeless people in Glenrothes dropped by 33% and in Levenmouth it fell by 38%. If we can achieve the same sort of reduction across the whole of Fife, we will make significant improvements on homelessness and be well on our way to meeting the Scottish Government’s homelessness target in October 2012.”

The Fife Homelessness Partnership, which is made up of the council, NHS Fife, Housing Associations and our partners in the voluntary sector, offer help by carrying out in-depth interviews to find the best way for people to keep their home, explore their housing options and give advice on money matters.

Customers can access the service by dropping into Council’s local offices, by calling us on 08451 550033, visiting a Home-4-Good centre or by making contact with any of the Prevention First partners who offer the service throughout Fife.
