TACKLING CRIME - SEASONAL SAFER NEIGHBOURHOODS

Archived news: published on Friday 14 Nov 2008 by Fife Constabulary

IN a pro-active approach to seasonal safer neighbourhoods, vehicle owners in Leven Town Centre and the surrounding area, who leave valuables on open display, will receive letters from the police offering advice on how to best avoid falling victim to car crime.

In the first week of this initiative, which is supported by Traffic Wardens, members of Levenmouth Community Safety Panel and Levenmouth Neighbourhood Watch Association, nearly 40 vehicle owners have received letters identifying that valuable property was left on display in their vehicles. Articles such as laptops, mobile phones and even purses were left in open view.

Community Inspector, Garry Muir said of this crime tackling initiative " Taking personal responsibility for your property will help reduce the likelihood that you will fall victim to car crime. Many people can be deeply upset when they suffer a theft and avoiding such circumstances arising are easily achieved when it comes to the safety of property in vehicles. Make sure that before you leave your car, anything valuable is secured away from prying eyes.  Don't leave out things that make it obvious that you have left something valuable behind such as a laptop bag or phone cover. When leaving your vehicle remember to 'Lock it or lose it'. This campaign will run into the new year and is a positive proactive step in Tackling Crime."

If you would like further advice on vehicle security, then please feel free to contact Fife Police on 0845 600 5702 and ask for your local Community Safety Officer.
