Draft Core Paths Plan
What is the Plan for?
We are developing a network of paths called Core Paths for the public to use for walking, cycling, horse riding and use by disabled people in Fife. The draft Core Paths Plan identifies proposed core paths that meet the requirements of The Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003. We would like you to take part in the statutory consultation about the core paths plan.
What are Core Paths and how can they be used?
Core paths are described in the Act as "a system of paths sufficient for the purpose of giving the public reasonable access throughout their area”. Core Paths are not all paths, but are intended to be the most important paths in the area. Core paths have many different surface types ranging from beaten earth to tarmac. The surfaces of most core paths will remain unchanged. The paths will be multi-use wherever physically possible, although some may never be suitable for all users. However, the Plan as a whole should cater for the needs of all user groups.
Some core paths are on roads or pavements and some suggested core paths do not currently exist, but will be developed over time.
Where are the routes of the proposed Core Paths?
The routes are shown in the maps accompanying the Draft Plan. These are draft maps that are the result of over three years of consultation.
The consultation is now closed but the maps are still available to view in draft form.

What happens next?
(Updated: April 27th)
The statutory public consultation period ran for 12 weeks from Friday August 8th to Friday October 31st 2008.
The Council received a number of objections/representations which are still being worked on in relation to the Draft Core Paths Plan.
It is hoped to have the Draft Plan and any proposed modifications put to Fife Council Area & Planning Committees by Autumn 2009, after which there will be a public enquiry, the date of which is currently unknown.
