Bedroom Tax

In April 2013 the UK Government decided to stop subsidising the cost of extra bedrooms. This became known as the Bedroom Tax. This meant that Council and Housing Association tenants of working age who had more bedrooms than the Government decided they needed had their Housing Benefit reduced by 14% if they had one extra bedroom, and by 25% if they had two or more extra bedrooms.

From April 2014 Fife Council made the decision to reimburse the full cost of the bedroom tax.  An application must still be made and the award will paid from the start of the current financial year.  If you haven’t already applied, all you have to do is apply for Discretionary Housing Payment and the full cost of bedroom tax will be paid back to you. The application is quick and easy and there’s no financial assessment. You can apply online at www.fifedirect.org.uk/dhp  or by calling 03451 551155.
