Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation

Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD)

Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD)

The Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation (SIMD) ranks datazones (some 700 people on average) across Scotland from 1 (most deprived) to 6505 (least deprived). As an index, it measures relative not absolute deprivation (i.e. how multiple deprivation compares between datazones, rather than how much deprivation is in each).  The index can be used to understand concentrations of multiple deprivation in Fife and how this should inform policy and the allocation of resources.

SIMD 2012 was published on 18 December 2012, and provides an update to SIMD 2009.

Local reports and maps are available for Fife, and each of the seven committee areas.

In between these dates, the Scottish Government have provided annual updates on the Income and Employment domains, known as SIMD09+1 and SIMD09+2.  There have been no annual updates as yet for SIMD12 as these have been affected by the later than expected release of 2011 Census data, redraw of datazones across Scotland, and known errors in population estimates.

The next full SIMD - SIMD 2016 - is expected to be published on 24 August 2016, and will be the first full index based on 2011 datazones.

Following on from SIMD 2016, updates will be published for income and employment domains for SIMD12+1, SIMD12+2 and SIMD12+3 will be published by the end of the year, to enable a comparison to earlier years based on new datazones.

Selected data from the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation can be viewed in profiles and interactive thematic maps at a variety of geographic areas through the KnowFife Dataset .  Local maps are also available in KnowFife dataset resources, or on request.
