Alcohol - advice and support

Alcohol is so widely used that we sometimes forget the harm it can cause to our physical and mental health. It is more widely available and cheaper than ever but if misused alcohol can take a terrible toll on lives.

 

The situation in Fife

  • 90% of the Population drink alcohol  (16+ population 252,846)
  • 31.5% drink at harmful / hazardous levels (around 95,000)
  • 7.4% are dependent drinkers (around 22,000)

In the last 5 years there were:

  • 11,256 Alcohol Related Hospital Admissions; and
  • 689 Alcohol Related Deaths

 

Advice and Information on the web

A number of websites can help you work out your consumption and provide advice on drinking within recommended limits:

Drinkaware aims to change the UK’s drinking habits for the better by promoting responsible drinking and finding innovative ways to challenge the national drinking culture to help reduce alcohol misuse and minimise alcohol-related harm. 

  

NHS Live Well - Alcohol - Provides information and tools to help you:

  • calculate how many units are in your favourite drinks;
  • assess your alcohol intake;
  • find out about the effects of consuming too much alcohol on your health; and
  • provide tips on cutting down.

Local support agencies

There are a number of local specialists that can help you or a loved one if they have a problem with alcohol:

DAPL - Drugs and Alcohol project Limited (takes you to an external site) - who offers one-to-one counselling, support, information and advice to individuals and families who live in Fife, and who are affected by substance use.
