Language and cultural support
The Bilingual Support Service of Fife Council Education Service collaborates with schools and parents to support pupils in Fife schools who are learning English as an additional language.
There are about 1000 such children, speaking 55 or more languages, spread throughout Fife. Many have been born in Fife and others may arrive at any stage of their school careers.
This peripatetic service (we move around the area) supports not only beginners, but seeks to raise the attainment of those who are underachieving through lack of English. It promotes race equality for all pupils, encourages bilingual pupils to develop their skills in languages other than English and seeks to build the capacity of schools to support bilingual learners.
Support takes a wide range of forms and frequently involves collaboration with other agencies and Black and Ethnic Minority organisations.
Parents are assisted by interpreters and translations where required to play a full role in the decision-making process, and the Service strives to provide effective and accountable support for all stakeholders through its quality Improvement strategies.
