Dog warden service

Dog wardens offer advice on dog ownership as well as investigate complaints received from the public regarding dog nuisances such as:

  • dog fouling in public places (you have a legal responsibility to clean up after your dog)
  • dog barking and
  • straying dogs

What can I do about dogs fouling in my street?
Please call us to report such an offence and our dog wardens can investigate your complaint and arrange to monitor the area.

It is an offence for a person in charge of a dog to leave dog excrement after it has fouled. Anyone found committing such an offence could be issued with a £40 fixed penalty notice, increasing to £60, if not paid within 28 days from the day after it was issued.

Do the Council provide free 'poop scoop' bags?
No, however they are available at a small cost from retailers.

Who do I report a stray dog to?
Call us or, outwith normal working hours, contact your local police station.

If a dog is barking constantly, who do I complain to?
If you are disturbed by dogs barking, please try to solve the problem with your neighbour informally. If that doesn't resolve the problem then contact us during daytime hours. After 5pm, contact the police on 01592 418888. They will pass your call to our night time noise team.

We will then investigate the validity of the complaint, contact the owners and offer them advice on ways to resolve the complaint.

What do I do about a dangerous dog?
If you think a dog is dangerous or aggressive, you should contact us.

If a dog bites or frightens someone, you should then contact the police.
