Curriculum for excellence

The 4 CapacitiesCurriculum for Excellence(CfE) is a major change for Scottish education – its purpose to create an education system fit for the challenges of the 21st Century.

The curriculum aims to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they will need if they are to flourish in life, learning and work, now and in the future. These are summed up in the detailed wording of the four capacities to enable all young people to become:

  • successful learners
  • confident individuals
  • responsible citizens
  • effective contributors

In Fife we have integrated our approach to CfE with our other partnership strategies, in particular Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC), but also encompassing the Early Years Framework (EYF) and More Choices More Chances (MCMC).

The Service, our teachers, headteachers and support staff are fully committed to ensuring that the change fully realises their potential – to raise standards, continue to improve learning and teaching and significantly improve experiences and outcomes for all pupils.  We regard CfE to be not simply a course of study but a radical shift in learning and teaching methodology and curricular planning in four contexts: the overall ethos and life of the school, curricular areas and subjects, areas of interdisciplinary learning as well as opportunities for personal achievements both in and beyond the classroom environment.
