Young carers are children and young people whose lives have been affected by their caring role for a family member who has an illness, a disability, or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse. Young carers often take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.
Caring for someone can be a positive experience and many young carers say they learn important skills and feel good about their caring role. Being a young carer can also be very lonely. Often, time is so taken up with caring tasks that there are few opportunities for friendships or socialising. Young carers may want to keep these things to themselves for a number of reasons, perhaps being worried about bullying.
Adults working with children share the responsibility of understanding the impact caring responsibilities may have on young carers and to know how to best help and support them.
The "Getting it right for young carers in Fife 2012-15" strategy document and accompanying summary paper, provide important information for all those working with children and young people in Fife. The Young Carers Authorisation Card can help young people access the support they need. Click on the links below to read these documents.
