Maternity, paternity and adoption entitlements

parenting

Maternity entitlements apply during pregnancy and following childbirth. There are maternity leave and pay entitlements and additional benefits such as time off for antenatal appointments. Employees who are mothers to be and new mums have these entitlements as part of our national conditions of service. The entitlements take account of current maternity laws.

Employees can become parents by adoption too. Adoption leave is available to help the new child settle in at home. When a new baby or adopted child comes into a family it can be a hectic time.

The Council allows paid leave for the person who is the main support to either the mother (maternity support) or the main carer (adoption support) of the adopted child. Sometimes this leave is simply referred to as "paternity leave".
