Cycling is a healthy and enjoyable way to travel and brings big benefits to the environment, for example by reducing the number of cars on the roads and improving the air quality. Fife has one of the best cycle networks for a council area of this size with 300 miles (500 km) of cycle paths. These include paths for leisure and commuting, which run through forests, towns, disused railway tracks, and quiet country lanes. Fife Council has been working with the Kingdom of Fife Tourist Board and Visit Scotland to encourage more local people and tourists to use the network of cycle paths for leisure, and other activities such as going to work and shopping.
Research shows that Fife’s new cycling network has brought more tourists into this area. Fife Council develops and maintains the cycle network. We also:
- Work with schools to encourage more pupils and staff to travel in more environmentally friendly ways
- Encourage people to switch from the cars to others forms of transport, including cycling
- Put in new cycle parking racks in towns and on the cycle routes
- Provide information on the cycle routes online, through tourist offices, leaflets, multi-media kiosks, route maps and clear signs on the routes
Walking is also a great leisure activity and is important in terms of transport choices. It is not only our main choice for short trips but its also the way we start and end the larger ones. The Local Transport Strategy aims to halt the current decline in walking and describes how we intend to go about this.
