Recycling & Waste

Recycling and Waste

How we manage waste in Fife

We manage your waste by providing you with a household waste collection service, recycling centres and recycling points.

You can make a big difference to Fife's future by doing just a little to:

  • reduce and reuse waste
  • recycle as much as you can of the rest.

Huge amounts of what people used to dismiss as "rubbish" can be reused and recycled. When everybody works together to reduce, reuse and recycle waste, we're all helping to:

  • Save natural resources

Many natural resources - such as the oil needed to make plastic and the ore needed to make aluminium drinks cans - are finite: they'll eventually run out. The more waste we all reduce, reuse and recycle, the better for the planet.

  • Save energy and reduce the risk of global warming

We all know about switching off light bulbs when they're not needed to save energy. Recycling can also make a powerful difference.

It takes 20 times less energy to make a can from recycled aluminium than it does to make a new one from scratch. And recycling produces 20 times less carbon dioxide.

  • Reduce the waste we bury in the ground

People have been dumping waste in landfill sites (dumps or tips) for years. We now know the materials we've been putting in these sites can pollute the air and the land. At Fife Council, we aim to stop all waste going to landfill by 2020.

Waste Aware Fife

At Fife Council, we're working as part of the national campaign Waste Aware Scotland.

We're using the name Waste Aware Fife and working towards the same goals as every council in Scotland to reduce, reuse and recycle as much waste as we can.
