France and its culture, in the widest sense, were both a revelation and a source of artistic inspiration for the painter and Scottish Colourist S J Peploe (1871-1935). One of Scotland's most important 20th century artists, Peploe was an accomplished painter of light and colour-filled landscapes, portraits and, of course, his celebrated still lifes.

This summer, we are taking the opportunity to showcase around 29 of our key works by Peploe at St Andrews Museum while their usual home - Kirkcaldy Museum & Art Gallery - is closed for refurbishment.

Most of Fife Council's collection of 44 Peploes was purchased in 1964 from the estate of JW Blyth, a Kirkcaldy linen manufacturer and keen art collector. After his death, his family sold a large part of his collection to Kirkcaldy Town Council.

Blyth wrote in the catalogue for Peploe's Memorial Exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1936: "Peploe was a great man, his pictures are the ardent outpourings of a great heart and a great mind - to live with them is sheer delight..."
