Cellardyke
About Cellardyke
Cellardyke, which was previously, named Nether Kilrenny and Skinfasthaven has a beautiful and charming harbour and narrow winding streets. In the past it was the harbour for Kilrenny a village nearby.
Its location is also immediately adjacent to Anstruther and to the uninitiated would seem part of Anstruther. However Cellardyke has its own unique identity built up over hundreds of years and like all the others ports in the East Neuk was used for fishing and trading with other countries.
Sailors who used to visit these shores after crossing the North Sea saw the walls or "dykes" covered with the drying herring which had been caught by local fisherman. The herring were glinting in the sun which made the walls look silver. The Scottish word for silver is "Siller" and mapmakers who heard the local name Sillerdyke spoken spelt it as Cellardyke.
