The Waid Academy was opened in September 1886 on its present site and is a non-denominational, co-educational, comprehensive secondary school with 834 pupils at present. The school provides secondary education for all children aged 12 to 18 in the East Neuk of Fife, a picturesque area devoted to fishing, farming and holidaymaking. There are numerous other small businesses which constitute an important part of the local economy. About 25% of the pupil population at the school is as a result of placement requests. There are several main blocks of buildings at the Academy, each of a different architectural style. In recent years a number of hutted classrooms have been provided to cope with the ever-rising roll. A new Sports Centre was opened at the school in August 2003 and new playing fields including all-weather floodlit facilities are on site.

The school curriculum embraces the full 5-14 programme for pupils in S1 and S2.

Standard Grades and some National Qualifications are available in S3/S4 and a full programme of Highers, Advanced Higher and Intermediate courses is offered to all S5/S6 pupils. Learning Support is available when required.

The school enjoys a good reputation for its work in Support for Pupils across all activities and was awarded a "6" for excellence by HMIe in their June 2006 report on the school. There is a rich and varied extra-curricular programme, and pupils are encouraged to participate in the wider life of the school. We have very strong links with our associated primary schools and joint-working with them on a number of projects is a key priority.

The school has an active Student Congress with representatives from each of the school's registration classes, who meet on a termly basis to discuss whole-school issues as they affect and as they are perceived by the pupils themselves. The monthly newsletter 'Waid Matters' keeps parents informed of events in the school.
