NorthQueensferry Primary School serves the village of North Queensferry and is set in a stunning location between the Forth Railway and Road Bridges. The school stands on the hill overlooking the village with views across the River Forth. The building has been awarded listed building status because of its historical importance, setting and preservation. We celebrated its 100th birthday in June 2014.
The building is a traditional one with three rooms on each of the two floors. On the bottom floor all three are used as classrooms. On the top floor two are used as classrooms and one is used as a Support for Learning room and resource area. We also have an assembly hall. Our dining hall and nursery are across the playground within the school grounds. The large play area, partly grass and partly tarmac, is to the sides and rear of the school. To the side and front of the school is a grassed area, with a pond and trees, which is used both as a quiet area and as a resource for science work. At the top of the playground we have a large school garden which includes a number of raised beds used for growing a wide variety of vegetables and fruit, a bottle greenhouse and an 8m long Keder greenhouse, enabling us to grow vegetables all year long. We also have an outdoor classroom beside the school garden. We have ten planters around the edge of the playground for growing flowers and plants and a well established flower border surrounds the grassed area. A trim trail was installed in August 2008 and some other playground equipment around the playground (speaker phones, hoops, spinning discs, seating area and xylophone) during 2009. Our outside area is used as an extension to our classrooms and we take our learning outdoors as often as we can.
Our nursery garden has recently been re-designed and is a secure area for our youngest pupils to play and learn. The Nursery takes part in a Nature Kindergarten programme with one session each week outside, either in woods nearby or at the beach at Port Laing. Our Nursery also accesses the school playground for more physical activities, for example climbing, cycling and pedalling, ball skills and skipping.
We use visits and trips to support the learning of our pupils. Recent trips have been to Gorgie Farm, Hopetoun House, the Museum of Childhood, Bannockburn and Lochore Meadows. Extra-curricular activities run after school or during lunch break: these vary according to season, but have included Gardening Club, Basketball Club, Multi Sports Club, Football training and Cross Stitch Club.
The aim of everyone in school, staff, pupils and parents is one of success and achievement for all. This is done in a variety of ways. We acknowledge and celebrate children's achievements both in and out of school each week in class and in school assemblies. Parents share our weekly reviews of children’s learning, which contain a page for recording children’s achievements both in and out of school. Newsletters go to parents regularly, keeping everyone up-to-date with the ongoing work of our school.
We have an active Parent Council that works very closely with staff to promote the interest of the school and raise funds for the benefit of the children -for more information please see the Parent Council pages of our web site. Parents are always welcome in school and we operate an open door policy for parents to meet with staff to discuss any aspect of school. We invite parents to share celebrations and special occasions such as our Harvest Festival and Christmas festivities. Once a month we operate a ‘soft finish’ at the end of a school day which allows parents to spend the last half hour in the classroom, participating in their children’s learning.
