Park smart and save cash in Kirkcaldy
Car parking is a hot topic in Kirkcaldy town centre, with everyone having something to say, and Kirkcaldy Area Committee is listening!
In recent months the local councillors have been working with Transportation Services to review car parking options for the town. There is also an ongoing consultation to find out what people think and the discounted season ticket is something they said they would like to see.
Thanks to an investment of £28k from the Fife Council budget to Kirkcaldy Area, local councillors have decided to pilot discounted all day parking season tickets from October 10.
The discounted season ticket is £60 a quarter which is £20 a month, that’s less than £1 for all day parking.
They will be on sale from 1 October and although the trial doesn’t officially start until 10 October, anyone buying their ticket from the 1st will be able to use it as soon as they receive it. The trial will run until 10 April 2020 when it will be reviewed.
This trial will help inform the wider parking review in the town, so Fife Council is keen to gather feedback on both the season tickets and wider parking options as these are develop through planned consultation events.
Councillor Neil Crooks, convener of the Kirkcaldy area committee, said: “Car parking charges feature highly in the feedback from town centre businesses and the public. The Fife Council Administration want to put car parking budgets in the hands of the local Area Committee and Kirkcaldy was chosen to pilot the potential of an area-based budget. We have in recent months been working with officers to examine the detail behind our car parking income and expenditure. We will be taking that work into the public domain before Christmas and following that engagement, a final report will be produced for the Area Committee which will help inform the decentralised budget option for all 7 areas of Fife.
“From the feedback we’ve had from the ongoing placemaking consultation, which includes parking, as well as directly from residents and visitors, via councillors, the additional costs for town centre workers and students was viewed as a priority area.
“The discounted season ticket will benefit anyone who works in the town centre, students and regular visitors. Buying your ticket will give you cheaper parking and direct access to the heart of the town.
“We’re continuing to look at other car-parking initiatives which we can test and hope to be able to launch these in the coming months."
Anyone who wants to buy the existing car park season ticket for £130 per quarter will still be able to do so. The advantages of buying this season ticket is that you can use it in any of the long stay car parks throughout Kirkcaldy not just those used in the pilot.
