Fife Council Employees Claiming Universal Credit - Advice for May
Published: Monday 23 Apr 2018 by Fife Council
Fife Council employees who claim Universal Credit are being advised to speak to their Job Centre Work Coach ahead of May, when many employees will be paid twice in the calendar month.
The benefit, which works as an income top-up, is paid based on earnings each month (the Universal Credit assessment period). Being paid every four weeks means that once a year, there will be two payments within the month.
This means that at some point during the year, when your UC payment period coincides with two Fife Council pay days, your income will be seen as too high to quality that month.
For example: UC payment period is 15th April – 14th May and then 15th May – 14th June. The claimant will be affected in December when there are two pays from Fife Council within the payment period.
The Department for Work and Pensions provides this advice – also available here:
"Depending on the amount you get paid, this may affect your Universal Credit.
"When you get 2 earnings payments within an assessment period, your income may be too high to qualify for Universal Credit in that month.
"If this happens, you will be notified that your income is too high and you will no longer get Universal Credit.
"You can re-apply the following month as you should only get one earnings payment in your assessment period then.
"You will need to be prepared for a month when you get 2 earnings payments in one assessment period and budget for a potential change in your monthly Universal Credit payments.
Find out what you need to do if you need to start your Universal Credit claim again within 6 months of your previous claim ending. For example, because you’ve received more earnings in an assessment period than usual."
