Fife's latest generation of Foundation Apprentices were given the chance to discuss their successes with employers and representatives from Fife Council, Fife College and Skills Development Scotland (SDS) today during a celebration at Windmill Community Campus.

The young people have been taking part in the Foundation Apprenticeship programme run in partnership between Fife Council and Fife College with funding from SDS.

The apprenticeships have given the young people the chance to take their first steps towards work before leaving school.

Depute Provost Julie Ford welcomed everyone to the event saying: "I'm so honoured to be here today to welcome the workforce of the future and hear directly from them how this programme has helped to prepare them for the world of work. Some of their stories are truly inspiring and to see the confidence and skills that they have gained is the best example of the success of this programme. "

Foundation Apprenticeships allow young people to start training while still at school, offering structured programmes of work based learning, involving training providers, further education colleges and businesses. The programmes include significant work experience bridging the gap between the classroom and the workplace, developing their skills as they learn.

Graeme Hendry, National Manager of Development and Delivery of Foundation and Graduate Apprenticeships at Skills Development Scotland, said: “It has been really positive to meet young people from across Fife who have benefited from Foundation Apprenticeships.

“Apprenticeships provide young people with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the world of work while working towards an industry-recognised qualification.

“I wish Fife’s Foundation Apprentices the very best of luck for the next steps of their journey in work and learning.”

160 pupils are currently taking part in one of the 12 different frameworks:  Business Skills, Civil Engineering, Engineering, Financial Services, Scientific Technologies, Social Services - Children and Young People, and Software Development.

Today's event gave a handful of them a chance to describe their experiences to other pupils, staff, councillors, employers and representatives of Fife Council, Fife College and SDS in a panel-style question and answer session. The young people described the experience they received from being within a real work environment and how it has been of enormous benefit to them gaining the skills they need to take the next steps in their learning and their future.

Anya, of Madras, who did work experience at a local primary school described her experience as being "very rewarding" while Megan described getting the balance between school work and coursework and other activities right to make sure she got the most out of it.

Georgie of Waid Academy and Joe of Glenrothes HIgh School decided to turn gender stereotypes on their heads with their choices - while Georgie decided to follow in her grandfather's footsteps, and pursue a Foundation Apprenticeship in engineering, Joe took his fight to the female dominated world of early years and primary school teaching but both agreed the whole experience was very positive.

The application window is now open for a new round of Foundation Apprenticeships with 12 different frameworks on offer. Young people can apply now at https://my.opportunitiesfife.org/opportunities/apprenticeships
