Every year 3500 people have an out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in Scotland, which is about 70 each week. Only around 1 in 20 survive to leave hospital, which is less than 10%.

Together we can change these statistics quickly and save many more lives in Fife with the promotion of Hands only CPR and the installation of Public Access Defibrillators within our communities and workplaces.

We hope to double survival rates across the country within five years. Reaching this level of performance would mean around 300 more lives being saved every year compared to recent years.

We have the opportunity to engage with the public and those with an interest in out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). We can work together to change the way we tackle the challenge.

Fife Council is fully supporting the 5 Fife Community Resuscitation charities and the Save a Life for Scotland Partners. The Safer Communities Team have set up a new website that contains information, guidance and advice on how everything defibrillator and CPR related. The website can signpost the community and everyone interested in purchasing a defib to the correct resuscitation charity who will be able to provide to provide further support and advice.

Alex MacDonald, Chairman Burntisland First Aid Services Trust, said: “Ideally, no-one should be more than 5 minutes away from a defibrillator so their placement at prominent locations is vital.  Hands-only CPR is easy to do. It’s great as a first step in the initial two or three minutes until a skilled person can get to the scene.  What’s even better is when some extra oxygen can be delivered.  So that’s what we teach our own volunteers – and others who are interested.  Our next public evening class will start in late September and enquiries are welcome via
