Next generation broadband for Fife

Businesses and residents across Fife are set to benefit from Fife Council’s investment in the national Step Change Project for Next Generation Broadband which was announced this morning (Tuesday 9 July)

The Council agreed at its Executive Committee in January 2013 that it would make an investment of £2.8 million in improving coverage for communities including the rural parts of Fife that would not receive commercial broadband coverage.

The national project will ensure as many premises as possible can access fibre broadband and is expected to take coverage to over 98% - making Fife one of the best covered areas in the UK in terms of high speed broadband. More than half of Fife’s deployment will also be delivered in the early stages of the project.

The Next Generation Broadband project will be delivered by BT and is being led by the Scottish Government working together with local authorities and government agency Broadband Delivery UK.

Depute council leader David Ross said the council’s investment will bring great benefits: “The council is determined the £2.8 million will help businesses and residents in rural communities.

“Faster broadband will bring a great deal of benefits for the business community. Having access to faster broadband will help them become efficient and able to compete in global markets.

“It’s also hoped we could see economic growth and accelerate job growth too from improved access.

“Residents will also notice significant improvements in the speeds of broadband, especially at the peak evening times, when speeds traditionally slow as people go online at home. The improvements will allow many more broadband retailers to compete and hopefully bring costs down.”

The council will now work with BT, the Scottish Government, communities and businesses to plan the phased roll out over the coming years. Subsequent detailed announcements will be made on which communities will benefit as part of each phase.
