Welcome to Hyndhead School
Hyndhead Special School is located in a quiet residential area of Buckhaven, in the Levenmouth area of Fife. We provide specialist education to meet the needs of children and young people aged 3-18 who have complex and additional support needs. The school, originally in Michael Street, moved to the current location on Barncraig Street in 1983.
The staff pupil ratio is high to enable full curriculum access and entitlement for all. Classes are staffed by a Teacher and Pupil Support Assistants and pupils have access to a full time Pupil Support Nurse if required.
The school has its own fenced grounds, adjoining Denbeath Primary. We have a paved playground area with planters, wooden tables and chairs and coloured soft pour play areas. We have a large selection of adapted bikes, trikes and scooters which pupils use daily on the area painted with mini road markings. Our established Raymond Gunn Sensory Garden includes raised planting beds and troughs and storage areas for tools, supporting learning experiences and outcomes within Science.
Inside the school we have four classroom areas, a multi purpose room used for lunches, kitchen based life skills and whole school activities, a gym hall used for PE activities and larger school events, a small accessible swimming pool, a sensory room equiped with sensory equipment and resources, a nurse's base and a number of changing/toilet areas.
All pupils in Hyndhead have an Integrated Support Plan/Coordinated Support Plan and a Personal Learning Plan. This is drawn up with pupils and parents at the centre and in consultation with relevant professionals. A holistic approach is adopted with therapy needs being integrated so that there is a strong educational focus.
We work closely with a range of partners in Education and Children's Services, National Health and Allied Health Services, Fife College and Third Sector Services. All parties work collaboratively to implement programmes and support pupils in achieving their individual targets. These are realised through a broad balanced curriculum within the National Framework for Curriculum for Excellence. Multi-sensory and interactive methods ensure the curriculum is dynamic and meaningful for each pupil. The curriculum is at a level appropriate to the individual i.e. experience, awareness, participation and/or knowledge. Development work continues to refresh our curriculum as appropriate.
Pupils in the senior phase access SQA National level 1 courses as appropriate, where there is a particular focus on developing the skills they will need as they move on from school to adult learning
We have acces to a minibus which allows us to venture further out into the community and take part in events and outdoor activities. We are developing good inclusive community links to support the curriculum in real life contexts with:
- Methil and Buckhaven Libraries
- The Community Garden and Heritage Trail
- Sainsburys Supermarket and local shops
- Salvation Army hall and Buckhaven Community Centre
- Toll Park, Blacketyside Farm, Letham Glen, Silverburn and Beveridge Park.
- Levenmouth Swimming Pool
- Falkland Woods
- Dysart Harbour, Lower Largo and Leven Beaches
- Scooniehill Riding for the Disabled
- Soft Play at Brewers Fayre in Glenrothes.
The school accommodates Hyndhead Additional Support Needs Out of School Care which is operated by Fife Childcare Services.
