Age restricted sales
It's illegal for age restricted products to be sold to anyone below the specified age limit. A trader could be fined or prosecuted if found to be guilty of such an offence.
Trading Standards enforces the law on:
- tobacco products
- nicotine vapour products (E-cigarettes and vaping devices)
- butane gas lighter refills
- spray paints
- DVDs and computer games
- sunbed hire

The website www.businesscompanion.info contains free and impartial information, and is Government-backed. It was set up by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute to provide guidance for businesses that need to know about all aspects of trading standards and consumer protection legislation. Ensure you select the Scotland option at the top of the page if you're trading in Scotland.
We investigate complaints about illegal sales of age restricted products. This can be reported using our Trading Standards reporting form.
We carry out test purchasing projects where we recruit young volunteers to attempt to buy age restricted products. If you are 15 or 16 years old and your parent or guardian would be happy for you to get involved with this, please contact us for further information.
