Sustainable Procurement

Fife Council recognises its responsibility to carry out its procurement activities collaboratively and in an economically, environmental and socially responsible manner.

The current Fife Council Sustainable Procurement Policy is under review, however it still includes a commitment to purchase goods, materials and services that minimise or reduce the impacts of its activities on the local and global environment.

Sustainable procurement can be defined as “using procurement to achieve long term social, environmental and economical benefits” and is therefore linked to the Fife Councils Plan (under consultation) which includes the following key priorities:  

  • The current Fife Council Sustainable Procurement Policy is under review, however it still includes a commitment to purchase goods, materials and services that minimise or reduce the impacts of its activities on the local and global environment.quality of life in local communities,
  • Increasing opportunities and reducing poverty and inequality,
  • Growing a vibrant economy; and
  • Promoting a sustainable society


In order to link procurement into the priorities of the Council Plan it is important when conducting any procurement exercise to consider: 

  • The social, environmental and economic benefits are maximised;
  • The Impact on the environment is minimised; and
  • The supply chain being used by Fife Council is sustainable.

Community Benefits:

  • Attending Employer Engagement Delivery Group (EEDG)
  • Community Benefits Policy Champion (advice and guidance)


Supplier Development :

  • Facilitate procurement surgeries
  • Deliver training to SMEs/Third Sector and
  • Promote tender opportunities


Sustainable Procurement Policy:

  • Update existing policy
  • Promote new policy
  • Audit sustainable procurement throughout Council
  • Obtain Gold WWF Pledge for Paper and Timber
  • Evaluate Fife Council (Corporate Procurement) against the Flexible Framework

Single Use Plastics

Within Scotland and beyond there is now widespread understanding and acceptance that single use plastics have a detrimental impact on our wider environment.That’s why Fife Council is in the process of cutting single use plastics from its buildings and activities.

The register below shows the main single use plastic items used by Fife Council. This will help inform Fife Council which plastic items to cut. We have already begun to tackle single use plastic cutlery, cups and straws. The register will be updated annually to show Fife Council’s progress towards cutting single use plastics.
