Task Forces ensuring recovery for Fife

The Fife and Longannet Task Forces were set up in 2015 as a direct response to the closure of local businesses. This includes Tullis Russell’s paper mill and Scottish Power’s Longannet power station. The Task Forces aim to help mitigate the impact of these closures on the individuals and communities affected.

With support from the Scottish Government, the Task Forces are working hard to provide help to those affected by redundancy, by:

  • Offering employment opportunities.
  • Training.
  • Advice and guidance.
  • Or through other means such as the creation of business hubs.

The Fife Task Force has now met on 7 occasions (most recently on 18 February 2016). Their 3 year Action Plan identifies a series of immediate, short-term and medium to longer term interventions and initiatives.  Which are:

  • Strand 1 - Workforce support and training.
  • Strand 2 - Business recovery and growth.
  • Strand 3 - Community regeneration.
  • Strand 4 - Business infrastructure and investment, including the future use of the Tullis Russell site.

The Longannet Task Force has met 3 times (most recently on 29 February 2016). A draft action plan was submitted for approval in January seeking £9m in extra Scottish Government funding. To date, no more financial resources have been allocated by the Scottish Government.  The draft action plan proposes immediate, short-term and medium/long term responses under 6 headings:

  • Strand 1 – Workforce Support and Training.
  • Strand 2 – Business Recovery and Growth.
  • Strand 3 – Community Regeneration.
  • Strand 4 – Business Infrastructure and Investment.
  • Strand 5 – Future Use of the Site and Economic Recovery.
  • Strand 6 – Environmental Mitigation.
