Underbridge access vehicle

A91 New Bridge, Guardbridge

Fife Council are carrying out a refurbishment of New Bridge, Guardbridge. The work began last summer when the bridge waterproofing, surfacing and expansion joints were replaced. This was necessary to prevent water and road salts penetrating the structure and expansion joints and effectively seal the top of the structure.

Phase 2

Concrete investigation and testing will begin:

  • 3 to 5 February 2015 each night
  • 7.00pm until 6.00am in an effort to limit disruption and delay

To carry out this work the contractor requires an underbridge access vehicle to park on top of the bridge. A single lane closure will be in effect and this will be controlled by 3-way traffic lights.

Investigation and testing is necessary to determine the condition of the concrete and the extent of any deterioration. This is done by drilling and breaking out areas of concrete and steel reinforcement and taking samples for laboratory testing. The results will be used to determine the best form of repair for the structure. They will also be used to assess the bridges suitability for the installation of a cathodic protection system which protects the steel from rusting. If such a system is suitable it should give the structure a relatively long maintenance free period.

The concrete repair work is likely to take place in the Autumn of 2015. This work will take place below the structure and should not cause much disruption to traffic. Some lane closures may be required for some activities but again every effort will be made to have them off peak or overnight.
