At Fife Council we recognise that some young people need further guidance at the pre-employment stage of their development. We run ‘academies’ based on that premise, where young people attend an introductory programme based on the individuals employability, personal/social development needs. They give a number of young people employability skills (understanding the importance of timekeeping and personal presentation), basic IT skills and valuable work experience placements within the Council.

Academies may be targeted at specific groups or job roles and each one is different. They allow young people to gain valuable work experience and training to enhance their opportunity to apply for jobs and apprenticeships.

Academies can run for up to 26 weeks and be general or specific to an upcoming role. In July 2014 we ran an academy specifically for Early Years Officers. Twenty young Fifers are getting the chance to start a career in childcare thanks to Fife Council’s Workforce Youth Investment Programme.

The 10 week project gave training in childcare to the group and is also offering a placement in a council nursery to give people the chance to put their skills into action.

Following the Academy, there were a number of Early Years Officer Modern Apprenticeship opportunities available. These will provide a job and qualifications helping successful candidates secure a future career in childcare.

Academies are advertised through Opportunities Fife, there may be an allowance payable for the duration of the academy, open to those unemployed or working less than 16 hours per week.
